artificial blood market. From perfluorocarbons to haemoglobin,
scientists have been attempting to create fake blood from a variety of
different chemicals. With the development of stem cell research, scientists
started producing RBCs from cord blood stem cells. Red blood cells made from
stem cells underwent their first clinical trials in 2009, with enrolment
opening. In this investigation, stem cells from adult bone marrow and cord
blood were employed. The research was carried out at the University of Paris
VI's Hematological Laboratory.
The World Health Organization
(WHO) estimates that 50,000 stem cell transplants are carried out annually
around the world, including 2,000 cord blood hematopoietic stem cell
transplants. The use of stem cells from cord blood has expanded because they
can be employed allogeneically and do not require complete human leukocyte
antigen (HLA) tissue matching. Furthermore, graft vs. host disease is less
common there. Over 50% of all paediatric stem cell transplants performed in the
United States utilise cord blood, according to the New York Blood Center
(NYBC), the largest cord blood bank in the world in terms of units kept. Adults
in Japan have been found to have a comparable statistic.
